Over time, chimneys may become clogged with creosote, a byproduct of burning wood. This build up leaves a highly combustible residue on the inside of the chimney. Creosote buildup is inevitable. Just look at this large chunk of creosote that was clogging this chimney.
How often do I need my Chimney Cleaned/Inspected?
At Polar Bear, we recommend you have your chimney inspected once a year, in accordance with (NFPA) regulations.
However, some customers don’t typically use their fireplace very much in a winter season, especially if it doesn’t get cold enough to warrant it.
We advise that if you use your fireplace more than 3 times a week all winter, that you should have your chimney cleaned every year; Assuming that you burned dry-seasoned hard wood only.
Benefits to having it cleaned yearly:
The creosote/soot from last season is cleaned off, and won’t harden before next years winter, let alone, add to the accumulation for next season.
The chimney should ultimately draw better with a flue that has smoother walls.
